Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever continental adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that all but guarantees them a place in the Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct entry to the knockout stages, particularly following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a chance for several Palace's lesser-used talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, scoring for the second consecutive succession.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season were outmatched even for a mostly second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were already weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Control Asserted from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close minutes later, fizzing a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the official waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for two robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, but saw his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a glaring chance, indicating there is still room for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
