The Global Health Body Raises Warning Over Critical Shortage of Obesity Jabs

Less than one in 10 patients who could benefit from GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy can access them, states the global health agency as it publishes its initial guidance on the medications.

Given more than one billion individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is urging more widespread and fairer access to this class of drugs.

Based on estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"Our new guidelines recognises that excess weight is a chronic disease that can be addressed with thorough and lifelong treatment," said the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

High costs, constrained manufacturing, and distribution challenges are key obstacles to universal access to the treatments that can help people shift considerable weight, notes the organization.

Weight-Loss Drug Scarcity

Even under the current best projected outlook, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies could only cover around 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.

The advice calls on nations and manufacturers to increase access, via approaches including patent sharing.

The intellectual property rights on a key compound – the main ingredient of a leading brand – is scheduled to end in multiple nations in 2026.
