The Former President's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this time, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at over $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
