Shifting from Acclaim to Rage: Conservative Response to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.
Conservative reactions to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how heavy censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. history has a President or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the redaction process.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.
“People are raging and disengaging,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the redactions break the law, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, including high-profile figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed some conservative voices to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. So they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the loud calls for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law mandating the files' release.
Loomer, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing influencers were provided physical folders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
