In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political leaders. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
